I have a small architectural firm in the Chicagoland area. Last year I was working on my computer when it froze up on me. When I tried to restart it, it would not restart. I have multiple drives configured on this machine to increase performance. Until this day, I had been keeping backups on a local drive. I had just deleted the backup file to make room on the drive and was about to start a new backup job when this happened. Unfortunately, with this configuration, if one drive fails, they all fail. I called Dell and was told that with this particular drive configuration I would NOT be able to get my data back. I called Chris at Abacus Technical Solutions and he said “maybe, maybe not. Let me come by and have a look.”

He came by and confirmed that I was in serious trouble. He then told me that he had partnered with a data recovery firm that may be able to restore the data. He took the drives with him and personally took them to his data recovery outfit as time was an issue.

I was on pins and needles waiting to hear the fate of all my architectural drawings. You can’t imagine my relief when Chris called a few days later and told me that it appears as though the data is “recoverable.” He personally went to the data recovery group and brought a usb hard drive back to my office.

We were able to replace the drives, install Windows, all my applications and my data. It was then that I realized that if you are going to rely on your computers and data, you need to have an IT firm constantly looking over your shoulder to ensure disasters to not happen. Don’t wait for a disaster. Chris even admitted that we got lucky. Next time the data may not be there.

He helped me implement a backup and disaster recovery plan so that if something like this should happen again, costs and time of recovery will be minimal and guaranteed.

I originally met Chris when I asked him to make some repairs to my home-made, high-performance desktop computer. I have a small technical drawing firm and rely heavily on my computers and the data on them. When my business grew, Chris helped me decide to purchase a server for my firm. He speced out the server and network that consisted of 2 computers, 2 laptops, a server and my blackberry device.

Now, we have a reliable backup and disaster recovery solution in place, daily backups of our data, remote access to our network, and, because we have a contract with Chris, the knowledge that Chris is keeping a watchful eye on our network at all times. I have a small marketing lists company. We have a server and two pc’s. We keep all our data on the server. My accountant told me that my Quickbooks was outdated and that I should upgrade to Quickbooks 2008. When I called Intuit to order my new Quickbooks, they told me that I needed upgrade my Server’s Operating System. Since we don’t have an IT department I called a friend of mine who is an IT provider for small businesses.

Chris offered to come out to our small business and have a look. He came out and almost immediately noted that 1 of the 3 hard drives on our server had malfunctioned. He informed me that if I lose another one, I will lose all my data. He then asked if we had a backup and recovery plan. I told him that everything had been running so well that we didn’t even think about it. Chris immediately made a temporary backup of all our data to one over desktops and had me order two additional drives (one for the repair and one for a spare). I can’t even imagine what would have happened if we had lost all our data…accounting information, lists, customer records, etc..

It is good knowing someone is out there keeping our best interest at heart.

Chris quoted us Microsoft Small Business Server 2003. He came out, installed the software and got all our computers synchronized with the server. He put an online backup solution in place that backs up our data several times a day. I am so glad to know that everything was now installed properly and that our data is being backed up. I decided not to take any chances like that again. I signed a Managed Support Contract with Chris. Now I know his system is monitoring our network at all times. A few times a year, Chris comes by the office with all kinds of information about the performance of our machines and server. He is always enthusiastic about new technologies and solutions facing small businesses, even businesses as small as ours. Our network has been running smoothly and my mind is at easy knowing our IT problems are someone else’s...
